Alternatives to Plastics

I recently watched a movie called The Story of Plastic.

This got me thinking about my life, and just how very much plastic is involved in my shopping life. Covid made this even worse, having so many things delivered instead of just going to the store myself.

Though I can wish that large companies like Amazon were required by law to use environmentally conscientious packing wherever possible, I can at least be happy when companies such as Amazon sell environmentally friendly products... And Amazon has used recyclable padded bags.

I found many alternatives to plastic on Amazon. For example, Eco Grocery Bags and Bio Bags
I found a whole site dedicated to alternatives to plastic bags, biodegradable equivalents called Good Start Packing.  I see a few products I will be switching to, like biodegradable, quart-sized ziplock-like bags.

This post will be continued... it is just a start.

I will last post a page that has a few different films about plastics and other information. It is called plasticchange.org

The True Cost Movie: Fashion Cunsumerism, Nafta, and Billionaires

From both movies "The True Cost", and "The River Blue

The exports in 2018 from the site Statista was 96.55 trillian Rupiah. This equals only 6,721,647 US Dollars.

I started the exploration thinking about how to change polluted waters into healthy waters. The solution was to stop the pollution. Then I wondered how much money the workers and companies actually made. I thought that if billionaires actually just gave all of these people that much money, then they would know they did not have to run these terrible businesses.

Yes, it may be unrealistic, I thought, but I will just look at what their income is...For the entire country in 2018, only 6.7 million dollars. Millions of lives, the environment, so much ruined for 6.7 million dollars.

Could Billionaires band together and save the planet I think yes.

The Best and Worst Charities Rating sites and Some Charities

From: Food First

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2009a, 2009b) the world produces more than 1 1/2 times enough food to feed everyone on the planet. That’s already enough to feed 10 billion people, the world’s 2050 projected population peak. But the people making less than $2 a day—most of whom are resource-poor farmers cultivating un-viably small plots of land—cannot afford to buy this food

This lead me to look for Groups who might be helping to feed people in the world....

An Excellent article by Consumer Reports about Charities

A charity’s name may signal worthy a cause, such as feeding the hungry or supporting veterans. But you need to look carefully at the organization to make sure you are sending your money to the right place.

“You don’t want to choose a charity by the name alone, since your donation may go to a questionable group,” says Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the charity watchdog BBB Wise Giving Alliance. Some organizations may spend too much on administrative and fundraising costs or are outright scammers.

Lobsters and crabs are sentient beings and shouldn't be boiled alive, UK report says

From MSN: Lobsters and crabs are sentient beings and shouldn't be boiled alive, UK report says

Octopuses, crabs and lobsters are capable of experiencing pain or suffering, according to a review commissioned by the UK government, which has added the creatures to a list of sentient beings to be given protection under new animal welfare laws.

The report by experts at the London School of Economics looked at 300 scientific studies to evaluate evidence of sentience, and they concluded that cephalopods (such as octopuses, squid and cuttlefish) and decapods (such as crabs, lobsters and crayfish) should be treated as sentient beings.

Vertebrates, animals with a backbone, are already classified as sentient in new animal welfare legislation currently under debate in the United Kingdom.

"The Animal Welfare Sentience Bill provides a crucial assurance that animal wellbeing is rightly considered when developing new laws. The science is now clear that decapods and cephalopods can feel pain and therefore it is only right they are covered by this vital piece of legislation," said Animal Welfare Minister Lord Zac Goldsmith in a statement.

It is from the numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Petitions & Legislation

The Big Cat Public Safety Act is a federal bill that would address two of the biggest sources of abuse of big cats by ending owning big cats as pets and stopping exploitative roadside zoos from offering cub petting and photo ops. Big cats purchased as pets are dangerous and typically end up living in inhumane conditions. Cubs used for petting and photos are ripped from their mothers at birth, physically punished to diminish their natural behaviors, deprived of sleep, then often discarded a few months later when they are two big to pet, with no tracking of what happens to them or how many die

Wild animals used in circuses spend their lives in cramped cages, forced to perform unnatural and sometimes painful tricks, day in and day out. These animals endure constant stress and are denied the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors. Wild animals have complex behavioral, physical, and emotional needs that cannot be satisfied by traveling shows designed for human entertainment.

The Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA) amends the Animal Welfare Act to end the use of wild animals in traveling shows, like circuses, with limited exceptions for certain entities such as accredited zoos, wildlife sanctuaries, and rodeos.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund works at the state and local levels to advance important legislation. We advocate for laws that promote or protect the lives and interests of animals, and we oppose legislation that would be detrimental to animals’ well-being.

We also work closely with the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s other programs to identify opportunities to create model legislation that address strategic legal issues in the areas of civil and criminal law, and monitor legislation that impacts animals at the federal, state, and local levels

INTERNATIONAL PETITION:
Support making ECOCIDE an International Crime
Mass damage and destruction of ecosystems (ECOCIDE), committed repeatedly over decades and permitted by law, has led to global climate and ecological crisis. Treaties, agreements and civil lawsuits have all failed to prevent this.
"We call on all governments to declare support for making ecocide an  international crime, in the knowledge that many countries must stand together to put this law in place for the long-term protection of all life on Earth."

Get 'Forever Chemicals' Out Of Bottled Water! by Consumer Reports
Forty-three of the 47 bottled waters Consumer Reports tested had detectable levels of PFAS. These chemicals have been linked to cancer, birth defects, and other serious health problems in people with prolonged exposure. The EPA has refused to set limits on these 'forever chemicals,' but that shouldn't stop the bottled water industry from getting them out of the water they sell.
(Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are very stable manmade chemicals that can lead to toxicity and health issues)

...there is hope!  An article here talks of how pets are being considered more as children than mere property in divorces. This upgrade in their legal classification actually gives pets more protections. Now we just need to get all states to make this change! There is no question that this change just makes sense. Animals are not objects, they are living beings and they are a part of our families.

Vendors are sealing turtles, fish and small amphibious animals into plastic bags and selling them as keychain and mobile phone trinkets. The trinkets are supposed to bring good luck, but clearly bring only bad luck to the trapped animals.

The animals can survive for days in the bag, but eventually suffocate or starve to death.

Craigslist: Stop Putting Animals At Risk! Sign the petition

Craigslist claims the sale of animals on its platform is illegal, but there is a loophole that allows anyone to post an animal for a re-homing fee.

Unscrupulous buyers are acquiring these free animals to act as bait in dog fights, while others look for free smaller animals, like mice or rabbits, as free food for their pet snakes.

Those looking to care for a new pet are also being scammed, given sickly animals that soon die.

Sign the petition and demand Craigslist change its terms of use and ban the buying, selling, and giving away of animals on their site.

Ban Cat Declawing in Canada - Change.org

Declawing is already banned in the following US cities: Berkeley, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Monica. Malibu condemned the practice in a resolution, but did not legally ban the practice.

Declawing is already banned in the following countries: England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand.

Stop Cat Declawing in California

Californians concerned about the welfare of animals thank California Senator Henry Stern for introducing legislation, SB 585, which would prohibit the unnecessary and harmful practice of declawing in California. The Paw Project sponsors and supports anti-declaw legislation in California and in several other states and provinces.

Was Leonardo Da Vinci Vegetarian

I was ever so happy to see many postings on the web about Leonardo Da Vinci's possible vegetarianism, possibly even vegan.

One post, I will try to repeat here in it's totality, as it has such very good information. This is directly from Leonardo da Vinci, A 15th Century Animal Rights Activist and Vegetarian - Humane Decisions (HumaneDecisions . com - a fabulously informative site)

Artist and Renaissance man, Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519), may have lived over five centuries ago, but he was ahead of his time defending animal rights, questioning the superiority of humans to animals, and decrying the evils of eating meat, drinking milk, and even harvesting honey from a comb. What is well known about Leonardo is that he was a brilliant painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, and military engineer, but what is less well known is that he was a highly moral, ethical, compassionate man who was a devout vegetarian and was passionately opposed to the taking of an animals’ life for meat or to eat.

Da Vinci wrote that he could not abide any suffering inflicted on animals or the horror of man inflicting any pain on them. He refused to consume animals or any animal products and his vegetarian diet was acknowledgement that he recognized the cruelty in eating meat and dairy. In a letter by Andrea Corsali’s to Giuliano de’ Medici, he says, “Certain infidels called Guzzarati [Hindus] do not feed upon anything that contains blood, nor do they permit among them any injury be done to any living thing, like our Leonardo da Vinci.”

In Leonardo da Vinci Artist, Thinker, and Man of Science (1898), Eugene Muntz wrote, “It appears from Corsali’s letter that Leonardo ate no meat, and lived entirely on vegetables, thus forestalling modern vegetarians by several centuries.”

In Leonardo: Discovering the Life of Leonardo da Vinci (English translation 1991), Serge Bramly wrote, “Leonardo loved animals so much, it seems, that he turned vegetarian.”

In The Mind of Leonardo da Vinci (1928), Edward MacCurdy wrote, “… The mere idea of permitting the existence of unnecessary suffering, still more that of taking life, was abhorrent to him.”

In a letter to his patron Giuliano de’ Medici, he refers to “our Leonardo da Vinci” as someone who refused to eat meat.

In the book Codex Atlanticus, Leonardo condemns the immorality of eating meat and drinking milk, when he says,

“Of Sheep, Cows, Goats, and other animals, ‘Endless multitudes of these will have their little children taken from them ripped open and flayed and most barbarously quartered.’”

In Codice Atlantico 76, you can find a statement expressing the immorality of eating animals,

“Man and the animals are merely a passage and channel for food, a tomb for other animals, a haven for the dead, giving life by the death of others, a coffer full of corruption.”

Leonardo da Vinci, A 15th Century Animal Rights Activist and Vegetarian

And from Leonardo’s own Notebooks, he wrote:

“If you are as you have described yourself the king of the animals –– it would be better for you to call yourself king of the beasts since you are the greatest of them all! –– why do you not help them so that they may presently be able to give you their young in order to gratify your palate, for the sake of which you have tried to make yourself a tomb for all the animals? Even more I might say if to speak the entire truth were permitted me.”

He was so passionate about animal rights and not causing any cruelty or abuse to animals that Leonardo can be seen in a picture releasing a bird from its cage, that he had just bought at the market, while surprised bystanders look on. In a book written by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) about hundreds of artists entitled Lives of the Most Eminent Italian Architects, Painters, and Sculptors, that he first published in 1550, Vasari writes that Leonardo so loved animals that he bought caged birds sold in Italy at that time as food, as well as pets—and simply to let them go.

Long before such ideas were widespread, let alone fashionable, Leonardo defended the rights of animals. Animal rights is a repeated theme in his notebooks, and he writes that humanity is not “king of the animals” but merely “king of the beasts”, and that we are a more powerful beast than non-human animals, and he goes on angrily and rebuking that we use our power to raise animals for slaughter and to eat.

In making Conscientious Purchases : GOTS compared with Okeo-Tex

From: alterrapure

However, compared to a GOTS or Textile Exchange OCS, Oeko-Tex is far from the best if for no other reasons than it's allowance of formaldehyde, lax restrictions on pesticide, and no relevant environmental policy. If buying an Oeko-Tex certified product, be sure to also check the Oeko-Tex database

[ The above is a very quick summary much more detail can be found by clicking
